Interview 11

 Feature Interview

November  2008
Renee Biertempfel
Fantasy Painter of Magic

1.) Can you please tell me your name and if it is your married or maiden name.
Renee Biertempfel, which reads like “Beer-Temple”, is my maiden name.
2.) Can you tell me what nationality that you are and if your family is still near you? Where did you grow up?
Well interestingly, I just found out what my nationality is being I am adopted and not long ago looked into my origins... I am a mix of French, English, Dutch, German, Slavic I grew up in a small town called Harmony 40 min outside the city of Pittsburgh Pa.

3.) I see that you are married and have some children can you please tell us a little bit about your family and your hubby too so your fans can get to know you a little better.
I have been married for 3 years to Blake but been together since 2001.
4.) Renee did you go to college for art? If so where did you study and what did you study. If not can you tell me where you got your experience in your artwork field?
I went to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and got an associates degree in Visual Communications.
5.) I see that you have combined both the hero artwork of Science Fiction along with the essence of the Fairy Fantasy Art. Has that always been your style and if not what did you do in art before?
I have always loved those subjects.  So I read and collect art in that genre,  It just came natural to want to paint it as well. As far as before I started doing fantasy art full time I worked as a designer in the gift industry and as a graphic artist doing layout for print.

6.) Can you tell me what mediums you use to do a piece of art from start to finish?
I mostly work in digital but I also enjoy watercolor and acrylic painting... I want to be diverse and keep forging ahead with new mediums as well as staying in touch with traditional ones.
7.) Can you tell me how you come to get all the light into your paintings that make them so magical? Is there a special technique that you use to accomplish light?
Well I have been working at painting more dynamic and striking scenes with light and color... having a main light source and a second dramatic light source using an interesting color.
Also that glow that you have seen in past paintings is a great effect in Photoshop called color dodge. I been using it less now and trying to paint the light and use it as a small enhancement for little things.

For those who do not paint,  light is a difficult thing to capture and Renee is one of the best I have seen.

8.) Renee have you studied anatomy or where have you learned the great mussel tone that your art shows for the subjects? Do you use models?
No models...I draw people all the time still need to perfect it though but I have sketchbooks filled with people.
9.) Can you please tell us where you come up with the dreams of the subjects that you paint? Is there something that inspires you to do these people? Fashion, Movies, Games or so on?
Sometimes they are inspired by a situation...or they come as a impression...I love books so I get triggers reading stories and music is a big factor as well.  I always have music going when painting.
10.) Can you tell me what it is that you really want to do in your profession and what is your goal?
To get better at my craft ... I work hard on that all the time...and to make a modest living so I can continue to paint in this genre.
11.) I always ask all the people I interview their opinion on the earth and animals.
I love animals and I hope that folks out there acknowledge that they are important just as much as we are...and the earth as well is a living thing we have to take care of her.
12.) If you got to paint someone or somewhere who would it be and where would it be?
My birth mother , I would love to see her face I hope to one day...painting her would be a honor...

13.) Can you tell us what is the most exciting thing that has happened to you in your art career?
Having met some really talented artists out there!
14.) Can you tell us what is the best thing that has happened to you in your life?
Childhood
15.) Renee can you tell us what advice you can give to artists about the industry of licensing your art?
Well speaking from the school of hard knocks please folks get a lawyer to read over your contracts or someone who understands contract law...You have a right to negotiate the terms in the contracts presented to you at the get go...Don't get to much stardust in your eyes if it gets flinged at you it could blind you to what the truth is about who you are dealing with...Make sure in your contracts your rights to your work are intact and make sure to have a exit out if things go awry. All in all most companies are lovely and will work with you but there are a few out there that can trip up your career so always stay diligent.

16.) Can you give our readers some advice that will help them further their career?
Lots of patience and keep working hard to evolve your work...
17.) Please tell the readers what artists inspire you whether they are old artists from later days or ones that you associate with now?
Their are lots of them. Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell I look up to greatly! I also love Brom, Barry Windsor Smith, Alphonse Mucha...and the list goes on...
18.) Renee I always ask this question to most of the people that I interview. If you had a wish or a dream to come true what would it be?
I hope to have my own art book one day that's a big one as far as my art goes...and to be known as a great painter during a progressive time with the new medium of digital art . . . got to lot of work ahead of me.

19.) Please tell us what you like to do in your spare time?
I am a big on virtual worlds! I am creating a lot on Second Life . . . aside from that Tarot Reading, I love collections of Short Stories, and getting out for walks in nature.

Renee thanks so much for this interview.  I know our readers love you and I am happy to give to them a little more about you so they can feel closer to you.  You inspire me as a artist our Mystic loves your work too.  Please everyone visit Renee at her website for her Magical Fantasy Paintings of Glowing Wanders as she does have the Gift!
